Looking for Langston + Dressed Like Kings

Metrograph

Isaac Julien’s lyrical Looking for Langston integrates archival newsreel of 1920s Harlem with original scripted scenes in lush black-and-white, recreating the Harlem Renaissance and highlighting the essential role of Black queer identity. This film, drawing from works by Langston Hughes and James Baldwin, envisions speakeasies as havens for free expression of Black gay culture. Screening with Dressed Like Kings, which examines the male oswenka pageant in South Africa 10 years after the abolishment of apartheid.
